Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hastings and Prince Edward Counties

It's NOT about HOMEWORK!!!! This is a program that takes place at school, during the school year and allows Mentors (volunteers) to spend one hour a week with a Mentee (Child) during school hours on school property to develop a friendship, participate in activities and just simply chat! Building a positive, new friendship strengthens a child's self-esteem and school performance, and provides a Volunteer with a chance to re-experience the adventure of childhood. School boards allow breaks from regular programming for children to take part.

We encourage employers to give employees the time during the workday to volunteer…studies show that people who volunteer perform better on the job! The business community may also assist the local Big Brother/Big Sister agency with the operating costs of this program, if they wish.

There is nothing more magical than seeing a smile on a young one's face. Our Mentees are elementary school students who would benefit from a one-to-one friendship with a caring adult. Mentees are kids who, through encouragement, could realize their full potential by learning to feel good about themselves.

Any caring, responsible adult can make a difference. Mentors are all ages and come from all walks of life; trades people, homemakers, university and college students, retirees, members of the business community. The list is endless. All we ask is this:

That you commit to one hour a week for the duration of the school year. This time will be spent with your Little Sister sharing the magic of friendship and particpating in activities on school property!

Agree to participate in a screening process that will include an application, interview and reference checks. It is also required for there to be a police check done on the applicant.
